Mechanical Engineer – Radioactive Material Handling Systems

Job description

Vulcain Engineering UK is supporting a major fusion development programme and we’re looking for a skilled Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the concept and detailed design of complex mechanical systems used in radioactive materials handling and waste management. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping innovative solutions at the forefront of clean energy technology.

Some of the main responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer will include:

  • Lead and contribute to the development of mechanical system concepts and layouts.
  • Review existing designs, technical documentation, and engineering feedback to identify improvements.
  • Define system- and equipment-level requirements and ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Develop and update system definition and design documentation.
  • Support the preparation of technical specifications and design packages for future delivery phases.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary teams to integrate mechanical systems within complex environments.
  • Ensure all work is delivered in compliance with relevant safety and quality standards.
  • Engage proactively with stakeholders to clarify design intent and technical interfaces.

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to one of the UK’s most forward-looking fusion programmes - applying your mechanical engineering expertise to develop innovative, safety-critical systems that push the boundaries of design and help shape the future of sustainable energy.

Profile wanted

Alongside a commitment to our values of Care & Compassion, Performance, Team Spirit, and Inclusiveness, we are looking for individuals who can bring the following:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Background in mechanical design within nuclear, fusion, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance and safety systems, and experience working with mechanical equipment used in radioactive or remote handling applications.
  • Skilled in concept design, facility layout development, and managing complex system interfaces.
  • Familiar with relevant engineering codes, standards, and compliance frameworks.
  • Competent in the use of CATIA V5 or similar 3D design software.
  • Solid grasp of engineering fundamentals and ability to translate technical requirements into robust, practical designs.
  • Effective communicator with strong technical writing and collaboration skills, comfortable working in multidisciplinary teams.

Please note that visa sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on role criticality and project needs. Many of our UK projects require high-level security clearance, meaning we can often only consider candidates with an existing, indefinite right to work in the UK. Exceptionally, we may consider visa sponsorship for applicants with niche experience aligned to our core work (e.g. EPR/nuclear new build).
